We were recently asked to create a fresh looking rida (bohra dress) boutique, amidst the clutter of Bhendi Bazaar. In order to transform the former space into a more creative boutique, we had to remove all unnecessary elements of the interior, expose its wooden ceiling, walls, beams and columns.

Zahra’s Exclusives as the boutique is called consists of two levels, one above the other, connected by a wood clad staircase. The lower space is the main space that is separated into three zones; the first space is the entry and waiting area that has a limited display section, the adjacent space has two consulting cabins that are mirrored where simultaneously two clients get to meet the mother-daughter design duo to discuss specifications and choose their fabrics and lastly towards the back of the space is the workshop where these ridahs are created on paper. On the above level is where production takes place.

The structure of the building is old and the walls fragile, we reinforced the ceiling beams and wrapped the lower level walls with perforated cement sheets and cross-stitched patterns to create wall art. Echoing this nod to traditional details, the inclusion of the cross-stitched pattern combined with the cement sheet panels lends weight of craftsmanship to a design that is looking determinedly forward. One that is Japanese in style and pays homage to the oldest form of embroidery.

The smoothest juxtaposition of technique and style occurs in the display unit. With its scaled veneer detail; layered upon a contemporary box framework, the theme of handmade, good-quality production is reiterated in every detail of the space. The approach and the unique space - sets it apart from the surrounding competition at Bhendi Bazaar.
