Sunshine Parlour

Whenever we receive a new design brief, the first thing we do is understand our client's lifestyle and requirements. Then put pencil to paper and begin planning. This 450sq.ft ground floor studio apartment is located close to Prabhadevi beach. We assessed it and found that it gets good natural light and is an almost column free rectangular space.

Our client and friend is a fitness instructor and likes to surround herself with colour and art. Therefore it was necessary to create an as open plan as possible. We gutted the entire space down and left behind the original teak wood door that the apartment came with. The door has several safety doors/ windows within it reminiscent of old Bombay apartments. We broke down all walls and merged the living room, dining and kitchen into one open space. The kitchen with a deep counter top, doubles up as a dining space as well. Our client likes to cook, and now that there is plenty of space she can enjoy cooking as well as entertain family and friends.

Wall surfaces have been left free of objects to allow for flexible display of art prints exploring colour and geometry. Further fulfilling the artful element of the brief, a wall mural was painted by the client and our team with a distinctive colour palette that echoed the serenity of the rest of the apartment.

The finishes in the apartment have been kept simple with the use of kota stone flooring and cement sheet panels for much needed coolness. Dark laminates and teak veneer for warmth and; white and opaline green coloured walls that provide flexible and fluid surfaces for curating and displaying wall art.
