Home Review July 2017

Mid century modern aesthetic are both formal and organic; stylized with a certain effortlessness integrated with nature and open floor plans. Function is as important as the forms characterized by simplicity, democratic design and natural shapes.

The design and planning principles of this style snugly fit the design brief for this 4BHK apartment in Sion; that entailed partly refurbishing and up-cycling existing furniture pieces. But most importantly we were asked to give a new dimension to the 700sft central plus-shaped space which houses the foyer, the formal living room, the dining table, a den and a (very) large library unit.

Patterns form an integral part of the design, be it the deconstructed chevron tiles on the laundry room backsplash or the white and warm grey stone rug executed on the existing marble floor. Fluted glass panel pivoted doors in a black stained birchply frame delineate the foyer with deep blue walls. The suar wood dining table is set against a sideboard with a creased fascia in cnc milled teak wood. A deep day bed with a re-upholstered armchair and footrest in ikat, completes the den area. The formal living room is a confluence of beautifully tufted sofas and restored cane furniture. Glass tops of existing teakwood center tables have been retrofitted with tiles. However, the piéce de résistance of this space is the framed library unit. A divan becomes a part of this reading haven along with a fluted glass movable vertical unit.

The matriarch's room has pastel green walls and teak wood furniture. A restored mid century modern media unit is placed against a teak wood bed with a cane headboard. The sons’ bedroom has a white brick clad wall behind a large bespoke teak wood framed bed. Bright ikats and linens dominate the fabric palette of the home. The art and accessories came from the clients collection over their years of travels; walk around the home and you will bump into a Kandinsky or a local artist from Denpasar. With the right amount of greens inside and outside, this home successfully creates moments of surprises and serves us with intermittent bouts of refreshing colour and restrained quirk.
