Happy Owl

Spread across 620sq.ft of carpet area, the apartment includes two bedrooms – one of which is set up as a den – that opens up to the, lounge and dining area. Located in Bandra the west facing windows frame views of the neighbourhood skyline. The client’s only brief to us was – “I’d like a vibrant and comfortable space with lots of storage.” Armed with that brief and the power of free reign we interpreted the brief in our own inimitable way by giving the space a voice of its own– ‘With a split-personality I am defined by simple shapes and minimally styled elements. On the other hand, beautiful, saturated colours such as deep reds and powder blue, excite me so all-white walls are not for me. Beautiful details, structured forms and happy colours are what I like!’

With that voice in our heads we turned towards Ana Montiel’s paintings for inspiration. Her work is animated and alive with undertones of warmth and compassion. Inside, everything from the wall colours to the furniture, fixtures and warm toned walnut and oak veneers were all carefully chosen to emulate that kind of natural beauty in a Montiel painting.

A conscious effort was made to ensure a seamless balance between the functional and the aesthetic – a black and white pattern tiled wardrobe in the lounge area and an all wooden drawer unit in the bedroom concealed the additional storage that was required.

The apartment is sprinkled with art, curios (lots of owl figures) and photos of family and friends collected from travels and over time. The styling is contemporary and detail-focused which makes the space quiet alluring. Warmth meets vibrancy in a way that is well balanced and unpretentious that one feels immediately relaxed and at home.
