Casa Loft

In the heart of Mumbai, this former 1000 sq.ft commercial space with 14 feet high ceilings at Mumbai Central was completely renovated and converted into a three-bedroom apartment. The concept arises from two contradictory requirements; effective usage of limited floor space, and at the same time, the creation of a clear generous space.

The loft apartment is therefore conceived as a duplex apartment; the living, dining, kitchen and bath along with the closets are located on the lower level and the bed - the more private spaces, elevated above. The apartment is linear in plan, and the spaces organized along a central axis or street. At the center of this street; crafting an intimate experience is the central court containing the dining area. The elevated spaces enable a different perception looking onto the dining space below.

The goal of the design was to create a clean interior without decorative overkills. Every square inch of available space is used as efficiently. The underside of the staircase that leads to the loft of the second bedroom also functions as the closet space, freeing up the floor space within the room.

The volume and scale of the apartment are reminiscent of Barragán like spaces; establishing dialogue between levels, framing views – in this instance of the dining space. Dramatically simple textured Shahbad flooring, vast veneer panelled surfaces and richly coloured walls are deliberately monumental and static in quality.
